Career

John Mercs began his career with the Beavercreek Township Fire Department in June of 1990. Over the years he has achieved certification as a fire instructor and helping to train and develop the skills and strengths of our personnel. Promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1995, began managing several programs, including the management of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations for the department. In 2003, he was assigned to oversee the operation and activities of the fire prevention bureau until being promoted to battalion chief in January of 2005. 

In December of 2009 he was promoted to deputy chief of administration and managed the department’s payroll, budget, accounts payable, and worked closely with the Township’s fiscal office.  In 2020 as a result of the department’s reorganization, John Mercs transitioned into the assistant chief position and now works closely with the fire chief to advance the organization into the future. 

Interdepartmental Achievements

John was was instrumental in rolling out the Township’s timekeeping software: OSL Solutions. He also managed the operations division helping to further refine the department’s incident management manual and more recently worked with the captains to help further their growth as shift commanders.

As assistant chief, under the department’s re-organization, he now oversees Service Delivery; Planning and Quality Control & Improvement; Support and Technology; and Community Risk.

Ongoing Achievements

In 2007, he achieved the status of Certified Public Manager by completing an intensive course of executive leadership training through the State of Ohio. John has been crucial to the success of the organization through the supervision of EMS operations and guiding the organization to become one of regions leaders in EMS care and education. He has received the department’s Meritorious Service award for his work with the EMS Division. John has also received a fire unit commendation for his involvement with the September 2008 wind storm event and an EMS unit commendation for multiple EMS incidents involving the de-escalation of firearm threats from patients. John demonstrates the vision and dedication necessary to ensure that the Beavercreek Township Fire Department is prepared to meet the current and future needs of the community.
