How to Become a Firefighter

There are three firefighter levels in Ohio with different hourly training requirements:

  1. Volunteer: 36 hours
  2. Firefighter I: 136 hours
  3. Firefighter II: 256 hours

You must be eighteen years of age to be eligible to be certified. You will have to successfully complete the appropriate course of training through one of Ohio’s chartered fire training programs, which are located at multiple locations throughout the state, such as Sinclair Community College or the Ohio Fire Academy.
